Why Does Fuel Quality Matter? Regular vs Premium Gas and Tips for Better Fuel Economy
Standing at the gas pump, it is easy to wonder whether paying extra for premium fuel is doing your engine a favor. The higher price can make premium seem like the better product, but that is not really how gasoline grades work.
What your engine needs is the octane level it was designed to use. Some vehicles are perfectly happy on regular gas. Others need premium because of their compression ratio, turbocharger, ignition strategy, or overall engine design. Using the right fuel is more important than simply buying the most expensive option.
What Regular and Premium Gas Actually Mean
The biggest difference between regular and premium gasoline is octane. In most parts of the United States, regular is 87 octane, while premium is usually 91 or 93.
Octane tells you how resistant the fuel is to abnormal combustion. Inside the engine, the spark plug is supposed to ignite the air and fuel mixture at a carefully controlled moment. If part of that mixture burns too early or too aggressively, the engine can experience knock or detonation.
Higher-octane fuel is better at resisting that type of combustion. That is useful in engines that run higher cylinder pressures, especially many turbocharged and performance-oriented engines.
What premium does not automatically contain is extra power. If your engine was built to run on 87 octane, filling the tank with 93 usually will not make it noticeably stronger, cleaner, or more efficient.
Required and Recommended Are Not the Same Thing
The wording in your owner’s manual is worth paying attention to.
If premium fuel is required, the manufacturer expects the engine to run on that octane level. Lower-octane fuel may cause the engine computer to pull back ignition timing or make other adjustments to protect the engine. You may notice less power, lower fuel economy, or reduced responsiveness.
If premium is recommended, the situation is different. The vehicle can usually operate safely on regular fuel, but it may perform best on premium.
And if the manufacturer specifies regular gas, there is usually no reason to move up a grade. Spending more at every fill-up does not necessarily give you anything in return.
Fuel Quality Is About More Than Octane
Where you buy fuel can be just as important as the number printed on the pump.
Gasoline contains detergent additives that help control deposits inside the fuel system. Those deposits can affect fuel injectors and combustion quality over time, particularly when injectors operate under the high pressures found in modern direct-injection engines.
A busy, well-maintained fuel station is generally a sensible choice. High fuel turnover means gasoline is being replenished regularly, and reputable stations tend to pay closer attention to storage tanks, filters, and fuel-handling equipment.
Bad fuel is not common, but contaminated gasoline can cause serious drivability problems. Water or debris in the tank can lead to rough running, hesitation, starting trouble, misfires, or fuel-system damage. If a vehicle begins running poorly shortly after filling up, that timing is worth mentioning when you bring it in for service.
Will Premium Gas Improve MPG?
Sometimes, but only when the engine is designed to benefit from it.
A vehicle that recommends premium can run more aggressive ignition timing when higher-octane fuel is present. Under certain conditions, that can improve performance and possibly fuel economy.
For a vehicle designed around regular gas, the difference is usually too small to justify the added cost. You are much more likely to improve fuel economy by changing how you drive and keeping the vehicle in good mechanical condition.
There is also a simple financial point to consider. Even if premium gives a small improvement in miles per gallon, the extra cost per gallon may still leave you spending more overall.
Your Driving Habits Make a Bigger Difference
Fuel economy is heavily influenced by the way the vehicle is driven. Repeated hard acceleration uses more fuel, and hard braking throws away energy you already paid to create.
A few habits can make a real difference:
- Accelerate at a reasonable pace
- Look farther ahead in traffic
- Avoid unnecessary hard braking
- Keep highway speeds reasonable
- Limit extended idling
- Remove heavy cargo you do not need
- Combine short errands when practical
Speed matters more than many drivers realize. As highway speed increases, the vehicle has to push significantly harder against the air. That extra aerodynamic drag requires more power and more fuel.
Do Not Overlook Your Car's Tires
A vehicle can have a perfectly healthy engine and still lose fuel economy because of its tires.
Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance. The engine has to work harder just to keep the vehicle moving. Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the specification on the vehicle placard, usually found inside the driver’s door area.
Alignment is another factor. If the wheels are not pointing where they should, the tires can scrub slightly as they roll. Besides wasting fuel, that can wear the tread unevenly and shorten tire life.
If you notice a steering pull, an off-center steering wheel, or unusual tread wear, it is worth having the alignment and suspension checked.
A Drop in Fuel Economy Can Be a Clue
Fuel mileage changes naturally with weather, traffic, driving routes, and seasonal fuel blends. A sudden or sustained drop, though, can point to a vehicle problem.
Worn spark plugs, a misfire, an inaccurate oxygen sensor, a thermostat that keeps the engine too cool, fuel injector trouble, dragging brakes, or incorrect tire pressure can all increase fuel consumption.
Even a check engine light that does not seem to affect the way the car drives deserves attention. The engine computer may be compensating for a fault in a way that increases fuel use.
Regular maintenance helps keep these systems working as intended. The correct oil, healthy ignition components, proper tire pressure, clean filtration, and a cooling system that brings the engine to the right temperature all play a part in fuel economy.
